Provenance:
possibly Dr. Johannes Guthmann, Neu-Cladow (now Kladow near Berlin), as of 1917. Our drawing may have been in the Otto Greiner memorial exhibition in the year after Greiner's premature death in 1916. The exhibition catalogue describes work Nr. 283, without illustration, as: "Kriegerkopf. Studie zu der Steinz. 'Grosse Kreuzigung'. Farbige Kreide. Neu-Cladow, Herr Dr. Joh. Guthmann." ["Warrior's Head. Study for the lithograph 'Large Crucifixion'. Colored chalk. Neu-Cladow, Dr. Joh. Guthmann."]. Discussion:
This drawing is a group of studies for the soldier on the far left in Greiner's 1900 lithograph "Golgatha. Große Kreuzigung Christi" ["Golgatha. Large Crucifixion of Christ"], Sheet V of the print cycle "Vom Weib" ["From Woman"]; Sheet V is recorded in the Vogel catalogue raisonné of Greiner's graphic work as Nr. 78.
