Provenance:
Ex. Coll. Guido von Usedom (probably 1854-1925), Potsdam (not in Lugt). Usedom was one of Greiner's patrons. In 1913, in his lithograph "Die Sammler" ["The Collectors"] (Vogel catalogue raisonné, Nr. 99), Greiner immortalized Usedom in a double portrait with fellow collector High Councilor Gustav Freiherr von Houwald. And in 1914, Greiner created an etched bookplate for Usedom (Vogel catalogue raisonné, Nr. 100).
Discussion:
During the four years that Greiner prepared his printing plate for the etching Gaia, his chef d'oeuvre, numerous detailed figure studies were created: Our study sheet shows four variations of the kneeling, nude woman in the upper right of the final etching, who extends her arm toward a child, as well as three detailed facial studies.

Collection Walter Bareiss (Tübingen, Germany 1919 - 2007 Stamford, Connecticut), probably acquired in or after 2002. Bareiss was a German-American businessman, who was known for his expansive and outstanding art collection, encompassing not only modern and contemporary German art, but also modern illustrated books, African sculpture, Japanese prints, and Chinese ceramics, among other areas.

Kunsthandel Dr. Markus Nass, Berlin, from whom The Daulton Collection purchased the drawing circa 2004. Dr. Nass was a Berlin-based art historian and art dealer from whom The Daulton Collection purchased many prints and drawings between 2000 and 2017. In 1999, he authored the catalogue raisonné of the graphic work of artist Walter Leistikow (1865-1908).

Discussion:
“After recovering from a severe illness, Otto Greiner began work on the large-format etching ‘Gäa’ (Vogel 93, Pl. XXXIII). Together with ‘Hexenschule’ (‘School of Witches’), this work is considered a masterpiece of his graphic oeuvre. Greiner devoted himself to its creation from March 1908 until May 1912. Specific details were meticulously prepared in numerous studies. The etching itself also demanded a great deal of effort: following two smaller trial plates, Julius Vogel records no fewer than 19 different states of the main plate in his catalogue raisonné. Our study drawing—depicting the subject in reverse orientation relative to the final print—presents five variations of the boy who, seated upon Pan's goat-leg, beckons three girls toward him, alongside several detailed studies of his outstretched arm. Vogel notes the existence of two additional preliminary drawings in pen, also executed in reverse orientation (Julius Vogel, Otto Greiners Graphische Arbeiten in Lithographie, Stich und Radierung, Dresden 1917, p. 99). … Finally, attention should be drawn to a red chalk study of the girl seated on the lap of the ‘genius.’ This study is dated just over three weeks prior to the present sheet (26/27. XII 08’) and is reproduced in Hans W. Singer’s Meister der Zeichnung, Vol. 4: ‘Otto Greiner’ (Leipzig, 1912, pl. 53).” B
